2017: A SHIMMERING YEAR IN REVIEW

Looking back at all that we’ve accomplished in 2017, HLB is proud to have been a part of over 150 projects, welcomed over 15 new employees, expanded our Daylighting and Sustainable Design Studio, embraced the IALD from coast to coast…and had a blast doing it all! See how all 6 of our HLB offices are highlighting their year…

HLB New York

One of HLB NY’s most memorial moments in 2017 was setting aside the time to celebrate each other. We hosted a “Welcome” party to celebrate our new NY office space, our team, our clients, and our work. It was the perfect way to kick off the New Year together – plus we couldn’t let a reason to party go to waste!

After calling our beloved Union Square Office home for over three decades, we packed our bags and moved up Park Avenue to the NoMad District in January 2016. Realizing this was the perfect opportunity to celebrate our new beginnings after settling in, we collaboratively planned an open house to launch 2017 and invited a select few to join in on the fun. Little did they know, they were walking into an HLB designed space. That’s right, we designed the lighting in the new office ourselves! A few of our designers worked pro-bono to successfully develop a beautiful multi-functional, “smart” space, complete with an integrated control system. Not only did this allow us to make the entire space completely unique and customizable to meet our needs, but it also made our workplace that much more meaningful, having had a hand in creating it. Our party served as the “big reveal” to show our work to our friends, family, clients, and peers. We displayed some before and after image boards to illustrate the beautiful transformation of the space, celebrating not only our new office, but more importantly our people and their work. The party was a hit and needless to say, we are proud of our team and their accomplishments this past year, and thankful to have a new beautiful space to collaborate and evolve in, and most of all call home.

HLB Los Angeles

HLB Los Angeles was ecstatic to accept the Award for Best Daylighting Project on behalf of SOM’s design team for the United States Courthouse – Los Angeles project. The award was given by the Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC) as part of the organization’s 2017 Professional Lighting Design Recognition Awards (PLDR). Tina Aghassian, Principal, and Guy Smith, Senior Associate, attended the awards gala in Paris this fall to accept the award. Not too shabby!

HLB San Francisco

As we look back on 2017, HLB San Francisco is grateful for wonderful clients and team members for another successful year. On top of working on and completing a number of fantastic projects, the team took time out of the busy office to give back to the Bay Area community. In August, the team gathered on an early morning at Crissy Field to help The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy clean up the trails. Crissy Field is located next to the Golden Gate Bridge and depends on the help of volunteers to maintain and repair trails, construct new routes, and protect the sensitive natural habitat. The team cleaned brush from the sides of the trails, cut back shrubs, cleared trash, and swept sand from the boardwalk. Later in the fall, the team met again at the San Francisco Food Bank to assemble grocery boxes for seniors. Through giving back to the community, HLB SF also grew together as a team and we look forward to future chances to lend a helping hand.

HLB Boston

The Boston team hit a big milestone in 2017! September officially marked 10 years since the launch of the Boston branch. Led by Senior Principal, Carrie Hawley, HLB Boston has built strong client relationships and produced award-winning projects throughout the years. Beginning at the Cambridge Innovation Center with 2 people sharing 1 desk, the team is now in the heart of Boston and with 11 people – each at their own desk this time! The 10-year mark was celebrated in the office with many industry peers to commemorate the journey and a toast to many successful years to come.

HLB Miami

Our fearless leaders of HLB Miami, Barbara Horton and Simi Veit, touched 16 firms in 2017 to educate them about Sustainable Trends in Architectural Lighting. The presentation covered the latest trends in the energy code and sustainable design, LED’s and unique products, trends in projects, and what is coming next in the lighting world as well all become more connected with IOT. Contact the National Marketing Manager (Jonas Foster, jfoster@hlblighting.com) to set one up with your firm in any of our cities! Fun fact: HLB Miami has presented to over 50 firms since its inception in 2015!

HLB Denver

2017 proved to be a big year of growth for the local HLB Denver office. Starting the 2017 year with 3 full-time employees in Denver, HLB closed it almost doubling in size finishing with 5 full-time employees! The response from the local Denver design community has been incredibly encouraging since HLB opened its Denver office in April 2016 and we are excited to continue growing our talented staff supporting our creative clients in the Rocky Mountain area.
