Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, UC Berkeley’s California Memorial Stadium underwent a major renovation and historic preservation breathing new life to the 72,000-seat stadium. Studios Architecture and HNTB teamed up with HLB Lighting Design to establish lighting plans and enhance security throughout the premises while maintaining modern technology and beauty, which the campus and surrounding area is well known for. The stadium underwent a major seismic retrofit as it sits near the Hayward fault line. A new press box structure was built to house the press, broadcast facilities, meeting spaces and the University Club.
The Simpson Center for High Performance underwent major restorations to the sports medicine facilities, study center, locker rooms, dining areas, office spaces and team meeting rooms. Since the prized Wall of Fame is highly visible throughout facility, this challenged HLB to create a lighting environment that tells a cohesive story: “Keep the history of the stadium intact while enhancing its new modern features!”
