HLB worked closely with the design team to create a dynamic lighting solution where color-changing LED’s provided the necessary flexibility to support a myriad of functions and events. But – it wasn’t easy! Check out how the lighting design reaffirmed the Pepsi Center as a standout structure within Denver’s cityscape.
CHALLENGE ONE: FINDING THE RIGHT SOLUTION
The primary goal for the project was to enliven the building and provide a sense of excitement for people arriving for an event and for the city, utilizing lighting and without altering the building architecture. The goal was for a dynamic lighting solution to be implemented so that it can respond to the various events and activities in the building. The initial brainstorming of ideas for lighting solutions to satisfy the Client desires was an enticing challenge, allowing HLB to take a step back and think about the building in the context of the city and how it can communicate with the surrounding community. As lighting opportunities were narrowed to key elements, the mock-up process proved vital to the success of the project; HLB was able to fine-tune proposed lighting solutions before final implementation including the design of a custom glare shield for fixtures within direct line of sight.
CHALLENGE TWO: LIGHTING THE CROWN
Early on, the design concept of lighting the underside of the Crown feature of the building was identified; however, the finish of the underside of the eave was a forest green. Understanding the desire for a dynamic color changing lighting solution, HLB identified this as a problematic finish if a variety of colors were desired for the building façade – so HLB worked with the team advising on another finish from the building pallet for painting the underside of the eave. Due to the steep aiming angle required to properly light the crown, HLB worked diligently with manufacturers to create a custom shroud element to ensure that LED diodes were not visible to the surrounding community and event goers.
All of the instituted fixtures were dynamic, color-changing LED fixtures. This allowed individual addressability and a wide variety of “shows” to be provided for the Client along with maximum flexibility for the future. In addition to the exterior façade, HLB was involved with lighting control specification, and successfully coordinated with the integrator for commissioning and programming of the lighting system.
