Seattle, WA – HLB Lighting Design is proud to announce that it has been awarded the IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers) Award of Merit for its lighting design at the Summit Building, Seattle Convention Center. The project was recognized for its innovative lighting design, which has transformed the 58,000-square-foot ballroom and public spaces into a beacon of sustainability, culture, and architectural excellence.

Located in downtown Seattle, the Summit Building redefines the urban convention center experience with its vertical design, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The lighting design integrates art and technology, using custom luminaires to create a forest canopy-inspired ceiling in the ballroom, while dynamic lighting provides transformative branding opportunities.

“To receive this recognition from the IALD is a testament to the hard work and creativity of the entire project team,” said Michael Lindsey, Associate Principal at HLB Lighting Design. “The Summit Building is more than just a convention center—it’s a canvas where light transforms space, elevating both the architecture and the community it serves.”

In addition to its aesthetic impact, the Summit Building’s lighting design achieves 34% energy savings and has earned LEED Platinum certification, demonstrating the project’s commitment to sustainability without compromising on innovation. The building’s lighting system offers endless possibilities for dynamic event spaces, while public areas like the Mixing Zone integrate lighting with art to create vibrant community connections.

HLB Senior Principal and President Teal Brogden played an instrumental leadership role in this project, helping guide the design from inception through to completion. Former HLB team member Sam Hewitt also contributed significantly to the project’s success, bringing expertise and innovation to the lighting design process. The project would not have been possible without the vision of the architectural design team at LMN Architects, whose expertise helped bring the Summit Building to life.

The Summit Building is a shining example of how lighting can shape a space, create emotional resonance, and promote environmental stewardship.
