Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC)

Anaheim, California
United States

This regional transportation hub is located on a 15.7 acre site where commuters can transfer between different modes of transportation including rail, automobile, bus, bicycle, and in the future, high speed rail. The mixed-use center also includes retail, office, and civic spaces—all within close proximity to Angel Stadium and Honda Center.

HLB was charged with designing lighting for a dynamic architectural environment that would have a strong impact—inside and out—on the image conveyed at ARTIC. Supporting security, economic, and operational parameters was paramount. The project’s design team conceptualized a glowing building envelope made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) which provides an extraordinary canvas for lighting. Color changing LED fixtures bring life to the unique ETFE cushions, casting a soft, translucent glow. As darkness falls, ARTIC is lit from within and acts as a beacon from the freeways and local streets.
