Billie Jean King Main Library

Long Beach, California
United States

Located within the Civic Center of Long Beach, the Billie Jean King Main Library introduces a safe, inviting and modern space for members of the community. The lighting highlights architectural finishes throughout, creating a comfortable space with limited contrast that accentuates the signature wood ceilings. The mass timber design required a carefully integrated lighting approach for the library stacks, which was achieved with direct / indirect fixtures helping deliver on key light levels while also limiting wattage to support attaining LEED Platinum certification.

Exterior light levels were an important consideration, as the safety of patrons after dark was a concern. HLB integrated lighting fixtures between exterior wood beams to light around the façade, providing high visibility and safe exterior light levels.
