Dartmouth College Thayer School

Hanover, New Hampshire
United States

In the pursuit of a cutting-edge engineering and computer science program, the challenge was to design a building that fosters interaction, breaks away from the sterile and conventional and exudes warmth with a modern New England character. The design is a testament to the College’s prestige, transcending traditional boundaries to forge a welcoming environment with warm, wood materials defining its essence.

A variety of lighting layers were strategically integrated to enhance the building’s identity, balancing modernity with a welcoming atmosphere. Linear wall grazers provide a glowing effect and enhance circulation lighting. Handrail lighting at open stairs provides visual cues to move through the space, and vertically mounted track integrated into the railing mullion system allows for lighting the central collaboration zones. Soffit mounted floodlights uplight the coffered ceiling, and another layer of floodlights in the mechanical space mimic the daylight from the skylights.
