Duke University Rubenstein Art Center

Durham, North Carolina
United States

Duke University’s Rubenstein Arts Center, dubbed “The Ruby”, reinforces the interdisciplinary focus of the University, weaving the arts within science, engineering, and medicine through this multifaceted complex. HLB collaborated with William Rawn Associates to provide lighting solutions for the feature black box theatre, dance studio, lobby gathering and display space, twelve flexible studio modules, radio station, art galleries, offices, outdoor working yard, façade, and site.

Within each studio module flexibility is provided through multiple layers of light, user-friendly lighting controls, and provisions for temporary lighting rigging throughout. The black box theatre transforms from “day” to “night” through an innovative folding wall system that provides instant room darkening. The plug-in lighting grid on hooks allows for endless configurations.
