Kara Creek Residence

Pitkin County, Colorado
United States

The owners of this modern alpine retreat sought to imbue the contemporary architecture with a warmth that made the residence feel cozy and inviting on cold winter nights. Through a carefully choreographed strategy, warm-dim lighting responds to the layout of the home while providing flexibility for brightness or warmth at a moment’s notice.

Lighting throughout the residence is neatly concealed and aligned with the home’s feature elements. Adjustable recessed luminaires bring a sense of order to the architectural layout and provide functional illumination for reading without overpowering the space or its surroundings. At the time of construction, the owners hadn’t made any artwork decisions, so the lighting is designed to accommodate a wide range of pieces in various locations. This approach paid off, allowing for the artwork to be meticulously illuminated during a final aiming session once pieces had been selected.
