The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

San Diego, California
United States

Given the sensitive coastal ecosystem that surrounds The Rady Shell, HLB performed extensive environmental impact studies and worked with the California Coastal Commission as part of an "exemplary" effort to minimize light trespass and preserve the integrity of the natural surroundings. The design strikes a careful balance in providing sufficient brightness to address a need for iconic expression and safety considerations for a venue with heavy traffic, while still limiting the overall environmental impact. Dynamic color-changing lighting serves the dual purpose of creating a "wow" factor for visitors while providing the ability to adjust color temperatures to avoid disrupting the flight patterns of migrating birds.
