UCLA Graduate School of Art

Culver City, California
United States

The UCLA Graduate School of Art repurposed this former wallpaper manufacturing facility to fulfill the diversified spacing needs for students, including individual studios, teaching spaces and a gallery. The exterior covered yards support wood shop, a ceramics studio, and social spaces.

The design focus was to preserve the connection to nature and the exterior while creating a well daylit space that is visually comfortable throughout. Dynamic glazing and tinting maintain appropriate light levels without hindering views of the surrounding neighborhood. Careful studies of daylight availability and insolation allowed the team to target which panels, orientations, and times could benefit from incorporating dynamic shading strategies so the view of the sky could be accessible.
