LD+A connected with HLB Principal Ken Douglas and Senior Associate Elizabeth Johnson for the magazine’s latest issue and cover story, Hidden Agenda, which gives readers an inside look at the design challenges and innovative solutions that resulted in the dynamic lighting of the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal.

HLB’s designers developed the complex lighting system that carries the dynamic movement of light along the structure’s entire three-kilometer length and up the inner faces of the cable stay tower. Combined, these two elements provide Montreal with a bridge that has a night-time presence capable of both subtle and dynamic lighting scenes. Recently, the dynamic rainbow scene has been used to recognize and thank essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
