Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital

Brooklyn, New York
United States

The former Coney Island Hospital has been transformed into a contemporary medical complex that caters to the healthcare needs of South Brooklyn and its vicinity. The 11-story Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital provides outstanding emergency care, modern labor and delivery suites, and advanced surgical services.

The design process was focused on meeting occupants’ needs and spatial aesthetics, all while adhering to healthcare industry lighting standards. This resulted in light levels exceeding typical norms by 25%-50%, while achieving a remarkable 20% reduction in overall wattage compared to code requirements. The design integrates lighting and ventilation in surgical suites, features LED fiber optic linear grazers in the inaccessible exterior façade, and custom curved edge linear pendants with specialized lenses above care team stations. Furthermore, by segregating lighting zones and employing zone-specific DALI controls, the wiring is straightforward and offers versatility for potential hospital program adjustments. On the behavioral health levels, NYOMH (New York Office of Mental Health) approved products were incorporated to create a welcoming and serene atmosphere for patients, families, and staff.
