The Underline transforms the spaces below Miami’s Metrorail into a 10-mile signature linear park, urban trail, and living art destination to create a safer, healthier, more connected and engaged community. HLB collaborated with James Corner Field Operations and Kimley-Horn to establish illumination strategies for the park that balance the myriad considerations for safety, vertical illumination, visual acuity, and uniformity while minimizing skyglow and light trespass for adjacent neighbors.
The lighting solution includes an adaptive dimming system that takes effect after sunset, utilizing sensors to increase the brightness from low levels to full output when motion is detected. This feature allows for energy savings along the 10-mile corridor, maintains low light levels in residential areas, and notifies cars and pedestrians when there is another presence on the path.
